Thulium laser, the full name is thulium yttrium aluminum garnet laser, which belongs to the long-pulse mid-infrared laser. The wavelength of the light is between 1927nm and 1940nm. When the thulium laser acts on the skin, the main absorbed target tissue is water, which is not sensitive to skin color. Moreover, the water content of the dermis is higher than that of the epidermis, especially the stratum corneum. Therefore, during the skin treatment process of thulium laser, most of the energy passes through the epidermis without seriously damaging the stratum corneum. The energy is mainly absorbed by the dermis and heats up. The epidermis forms an almost “translucent window” in the transmission of the thulium laser light.

When the thulium laser penetrates the skin, the temperature of melanin will be higher than that of other basic tissues due to the selective absorption of light and heat, and the melanin will be inactivated by heating. In the treatment process, because 2940nm has the highest water absorption rate, when it reaches the epidermis, it is greatly absorbed by the water-containing epidermal stratum corneum and dermal papillae, and if the laser energy is higher, it will immediately form exfoliation, vaporization and coking reaction in the epidermis, so we cannot let 2940 erbium laser penetrate into the dermis to form a “thermal coagulation zone” during the treatment process. The absorption coefficient of the 10600 laser is only about 1.5 times higher than the absorption coefficient of the 10600 laser.
The absorption coefficient of 10600 laser is second only to 2940, so it can penetrate the epidermis, and the tissue it mainly absorbs is located in the water of the dermis, so it can be irradiated with high energy more easily, and there is a small peeling, reaching the dermis, and if we continue to increase the energy and the time of irradiation, then there may be bleeding and scorching burns, and the results of vaporization and peeling.
